Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:
All people 65 years of age or older who have been legal residents of the United States for at least five years are eligible for Medicare.
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital care. The maximum length of stay that Medicare Part A covers in a hospital admitted inpatient stay or series of stays is typically 90 days.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) helps to pay for some services and products not covered by Part A, generally on an outpatient basis (meaning they do not stay overnight in a hospital or inpatient facility). Medicare Part B is optional. It is often deferred if the beneficiary or his/her spouse is still working and has group health coverage through that employer. There is a lifetime penalty (10% per year on the premium) imposed for not enrolling in Part B when first eligible
Medicare Part D (Prescription drug plans) anyone with Part A or B is eligible for Part D. Most Medicare drug plans have their own list of what drugs are covered, called a formulary. In some cases your specific drug might not be included in the formulary, but a similar drug should be available.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) are plans that are a popular private insurance alternative to Medicare. These plans offer long-term savings, plan flexibility, and better care.
It includes medical and hospital coverage, plus additional coverage and benefits. If you’re already enrolled in Medicare parts A and B, you qualify for a Medicare Advantage plan.
