Tax Preparation and Tax Season

  • Tax season is a period every year, that allows individuals and businesses to prepare and file their income taxes.
  • Tax season is usually begins January 1 until April 15 which is the filing deadline.
  • During tax season, employers, financial custodians, and other entities that generate income for individuals must provide documentation and statements for tax preparation purposes to ensure taxes are filed on time.


In 2020, the deadline for filing and paying 2020 taxes was extended to July 15 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The coming tax season and covid-19?

The best way to conduct an appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, this will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines.

When you visit one of our office it is recommended to wear a face mask and practice social distancing for our safety and yours.


What do I need to file my taxes?

What you need to file your taxes varies depending on your situation.  Are you a employed by a company, are you self-employed, do you get paid cash, are you a college student, do you have a dependent that is employed, is your only income social security benefits or disability.  We can help you determine what forms you would need to file your taxes and what is not needed.  Most commonly are forms used when you file your taxes are:

  • Your social security number or tax ID number
  • Your spouse's full name and social security number or tax ID number (if married)
  • Your dependent dates of birth and social security numbers or tax ID numbers (children or otherwise)
  • Form W-2 Wage 
  • 1099-MISC if you are self-employed
  • 1099-DIV if you received dividends  
  • 1099-R for distributions from a retirement plan, IRA, pension, annuity, etc.
  • 1099 (SSA-1099) for Social Security

If you are self-employed:

  •  Business expense records – These could be receipts, credit card statements, records of checks you’ve written, etc 
  • Mileage records – In order to get a deduction for your travel, you’ll need to know how many miles you drove for work purposes.

If you purchased health care insurance through the Marketplace, you will receive a Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, at the start of the tax filing season.  If you or a family member were enrolled in health insurance through the Marketplace and advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit were made to your insurance company to reduce your monthly premium payment.  You MUST FILE A FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURN to claim the premium tax credit.
